US asset managers win Morningstar’s best fund house awards

T. Rowe Price has won the Morningstar Luxembourg Fund Award for best fund house, the data provider announced on Thursday during a ceremony at the Centre Culturel ‘Schéiss’ in Luxembourg. T. Rowe Price also won the award for best fixed income fund house. Neuberger Berman, another US asset manager, received the honours for best equity fund house.

‘Within fixed income, especially T. Rowe Price’s high-yield, emerging market debt and global aggregate funds did better than most of their peers,’ said Jeffrey Schumacher, Associate Director of Manager Research for Morningstar Benelux. ‘In equities, their Japan, EM and Asian Opportunity Funds did well,’ he added.

Neuberger Berman mainly earned its award for best equity fund house thanks to the strong returns of its US Real Estate Securities and China Equities Funds, according to Schumacher. The award for best global equity fund was also picked up by a US asset manager: the BNY Mellon Global Equity Income Fund (+27.71%) won the prize. The remaining three awards were picked up by DPAM, MFS Meridian and Schroders.

The annual Morningstar awards recognise the retail funds and fund houses that added the most value for investors within the context of their relevant peer group in 2019 and over longer time periods. Morningstar selects the winners using a quantitative methodology with a qualitative overlay that considers the one-, three-, and five-year performance history of all eligible funds, and adjusts returns for risk using Morningstar Risk, a measure that imposes a higher penalty for downside variation in a fund’s return than it does for upside volatility.

‘This year’s winners have clearly demonstrated their skills and added value for investors. These funds and fund companies have not only delivered strong returns in 2019, but also outperformed their peers over the past five years without taking undue risk. They are among the best performers within their category, based on their excellent risk-adjusted returns,’ said Schumacher.
